The Wheatsheaf | Cotswolds
It’s no secret that the Cotswolds is the place to head if you want a quick break from London, somewhere you can get to within two hours and stay in a stylish hotel with London-quality food.
The Wheatsheaf is one of our favourites. It’s conveniently located in the pretty town of Northleach, five minutes from the A40 and just a few miles past Burford. It is very dog-friendly - not only are there are dog-friendly rooms around the courtyard but you can also stay in any of the rooms the main house if you are happy to pay an additional £20 for a deep clean of the room after.
The interior is perfect country pub style with roaring fires, barley twist furniture, oil paintings, flagstones and thick curtains. The clientele are a happy jumble of Londoners, locals and holiday-makers and the atmosphere is buzzy and fun. The food is very good with fairly traditional pub food in the restaurant and excellent warm scones in the afternoon. Breakfast is a mouthwatering mix of salty, sweet bacon, local eggs and sourdough toast with lashings of butter and marmalade so thick you can stand your spoon up in it.
The rooms are comfortable and cosy (the super-soft bed linen is provided by Bleak House brand Josephine Home) and if you are accompanied by a dog she will have her own dog bed, bowl and a jar of treats to help herself to.
The rooms start at an extremely reasonable £100 and so there really is no excuse not to make a swift getaway to the Cotswolds on your next free weekend.
