Afternoon Tea at Ham Yard | Piccadilly
Afternoon tea in London can be a hugely expensive experience and it’s not always worth the money. Glamorous hotels seem to be on a mission to out-do each other in the eccentric theme department but often this results in style over substance and you are paying through the nose for the pomp and ceremony and one-upmanship rather than for the food. When afternoon tea costs more than a three-course evening meal in a Mayfair restaurant, it’s all got a bit silly.
Really we just want to stuff our faces with scones and cucumber sandwiches rather than marvel at the clever cakes and whilst nothing really can live up to Claridges, we often head to Ham Yard. It’s a lot easier to get a table than at Claridges and their afternoon tea is a reasonable £21. As well as scones, sandwiches and cakes you can pimp your tea with little burgers and welsh rarebits and other hot bites.
The meal is served on Kit Kemp’s adorable Mythical Creatures Wedgwood china and when you’ve finished, you can spend a good half an hour getting lost in the rooms of Firmdale’s masterpiece hotel with its bowling alley, library and rooftop garden. A must for design-lovers and scone-lovers everywhere.
