Middleton Lodge | North Yorkshire
We are always on the lookout for stylish places to stop for lunch or an overnight stay to break up a long car journey. Anything to avoid the horror of the motorway service station.
Our new favourite place is Middleton Lodge in North Yorkshire. It's a hop, a skip and a jump from the A1(M)/A1 junction near Darlington which makes it perfectly situated for a break on the long slog back to London from Scotland. It's also a great base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.
This restaurant with rooms is in a converted coachhouse in the grounds of a beautiful Georgian manor house. As soon as you turn off the main road and drive through the tall, cool trees and park in their shade, you know you are somewhere special.
The food is wonderful, the rooms are gorgeous and sitting outside in the flower-filled courtyard on a summer's evening listening to birdsong is incredibly charming and life affirming. It's about as far from the tarmac and traffic jams as you can get. The lodge has one dog friendly room and you will need to call them to check availability.
