The Hare and Hounds at Bowland Bridge | Lake District
Located in the tiny hamlet of Bowland Bridge on the Eastern side of Lake Windermere, The Hare & Hounds is just a hop, skip and a jump from the M6, but feels a million miles away. This authentic Lake District inn is fast becoming one of our favourite places to stay. It is authentic, affordable, dog-friendly, has great food and nice rooms. It’s everything you want a country pub to be.
The bedrooms are stylish, comfortable and unpretentious. Our room had an enormous squishy bed and huge free-standing bath. Dogs are allowed and are very welcome - Edward was given sausages for breakfast so he is definitely keen to return.
The welcome is warm and friendly and the food is excellent. So often country pubs try, and frequently fail, to serve the sort of food more appropriate to a fine dining restaurant when really what you want is great quality pub food. Shepherd’s pie, Steak and Ale pie, fish pie, other sorts of pies. OK, any sort of pie. Plus a banging roast dinner and a Ploughman’s Lunch. The Hare & Hounds has this down pat - we are still dreaming of their shortcrust pastry. The puddings are fabulous, the Sticky Toffee Pudding in particular - and the Eggs Benedict at breakfast was one of the best we’ve ever had.
Ask behind the bar for a walking map as there is a great 10 mile traipse from the pub through undulating green fields, dense woodlands, bracken-y hilltops and past tranquil tarns and bubbling becks. Just the thing to build up a ravenous appetite for dinner.
