A Million Miles: Croquet at Chartwell
A MILLION MILES: JUNE
CROQUET AT CHARTWELL
One of the best ways to cope with life in a big city is to make sure you leave it as often as possible. With this aim in mind we have created a series of Bleak House guides called ‘An Hour and A Million Miles’. This is a set of twelve day trips from London designed to inspire you to leave the city for a few hours and soak up some countryside. Each trip is only an hour or so from London but you will feel like you’ve travelled a million miles, and possibly back a couple of centuries too.
JUNE: CROQUET AT CHARTWELL
Our June guide is a trip to the Winston & Clementine's house Chartwell, in Kent, for a rousing game of croquet and a wander around the beautiful gardens. It's pretty amazing really to be able to thwack a ball with a mallet on the very lawn Churchill himself used to play on and we we say make the most of this wonderful opportunity.
There is no necessity for a map this month, but our guide does have tips and instructions for how to enjoy croquet if you have never played before. Do give it a go, it's not as intimidating as it may seem and it's huge amounts of fun. Children of ten years of age or thereabouts are old enough to play properly and little kids love hitting balls with sticks so they will enjoy it too.
Chartwell is handily situated very close to the M25, near Sevenoaks. If you wish to tour the house (highly recommended) you will need to book tickets the day before but they are free if you are a National Trust member. The croquet mallets and balls can be hired from reception (no need to book) and cost £5 per hour plus £2.50 for each mallet.
